Who We Are

Welcome to Washington International Club, Inc., is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide a welcome for women coming to the Washington area from countries other than the United States and to encourage friendship between these women and the women of the United States.

Friendship and Understanding

The purpose of our Club is to promote friendship through understanding and understanding through friendship among women of all nations.

Our programs provide an opportunity to share mutual interests, learn from each other, share our cultures with each other, and establish deep lasting friendships.

For over 60 years, our guiding principles - The Four Ps: No Politics, No Protocol, No Projects, No Publicity - have helped our Club carry on our founder's vision.

Fascinating Programs

Our members enjoy trips to artists’ studios, exhibitions, and workshops and take trips in the DC area to destinations off the beaten track throughout the Club season from September through June.

Exploring Different Cultures

Our programs include visits to embassies where we learn about the cultures of many countries from around the world, as well as programs where members themselves share their own travel experiences and broaden our horizons.

International Cuisine

Cooking demonstrations, specialty dishes, and recipes shared by members give us a rare pleasure of tasting different national cuisines.

Meet Our Founder

In 1959, Marian Adair recognized the need for an organization devoted to interaction between US women and those of other nations. She also believed that better understanding of other people could lessen conflict around the world.

Marian, from  Ann Arbor, Michigan, came to Washington when her husband, Ross, was elected to Congress in 1950. She understood and took to heart President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 1958 initiative “People to People”
and so Welcome to Washington (WTW) was founded.

Welcome Clubs International

Welcome to Washington International Club is proud to be a member of Welcome Clubs International - linking independent women's organizations around the world.

On Jun 24, 2020, WCI was officially recognized by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and granted special Consultative Status.
